FIDELITY MACH II is an improvement on the original FIDELITY EXCEL 68000, mainly due to an increased RAM of 144K that comprised of 16K static RAM and 128K dynamic RAM which was used for Hash Tables. The original FIDELITY EXCEL 68000 only had 16K RAM. This resulted in a playing strength increase of around 60 ELO for the MACH II.

There were in fact 5 Mach II versions sold:

  1. Version A
  2. Version B
  3. Version C1
  4. Version C2
  5. Version L.A.

Larry Kaufman wrote about this in PLY Magazine (2/88) in 1988 and provided a method for you to test the different versions.

FEN: 1B1N4/p2n4/3P1P2/2nk1BP1/P7/N7/K3P2P/1Q6 w - - 0 0

FEN: 1B1N4/p2n4/3P1P2/2nk1BP1/P7/N7/K3P2P/1Q6 w - - 0 0

The correct move for the above position is 1. Bxa7 resulting in a mate-in-4.

The different MACH II versions solved this in the following times.

    • Version A - Plays 1. e4? after 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
    • Version B - Plays correct move after 3 minutes and 35 seconds.
    • Version C1 - Plays correct move after 3 minutes and 24 seconds.
    • Version C2 - Plays correct move after 5 minutes and 3 seconds.
    • Version L.A. - Plays correct move after 5 minutes and 40 seconds.

Although the times differ greatly between the 5 versions of MACH II, it is unlikely that there is much of a strength difference between the versions.

The version presented on this page is the Mach II “B” version.

Other features such as level settings and game controls all remain the same as the original FIDELITY EXCEL 68000.
