Tournament Stages for U1400 Blue Championship
The Guidelines

One of the goals was to ensure that each contestant plays at least sixteen games. This would assure a minimum preliminary Active Chess Rating for each dedicated chess computer at end of this Tournament. In order to achieve this goal, the Under 1400 Elo Blue Tournament match schedule was constructed under these guidelines:

U1400 Blue Tournament Stages

Stage 1

  • 8 groups of 9 contestants playing a total of 16 rounds with each contestant playing one game as white and one game as black.
    • Contestants finishing 1-4 in each group will qualify for Stage 2 of the U1400 Blue Tournament and seeded in Stage 2 based on their Stage 1 group play performance.
    • Contestants finishing 5-9 in each group are knocked-out of the U1400 Blue Tournament.

Stage 2

  • 8 groups of 4 contestants playing a total of 6 rounds with each contestant playing one game as white and one game as black.
    • Contestants finishing 1-2 in each group proceed to the Final 16 Knockout Stage of the U1400 Blue Tournament and seeded in the Final 16 Stage based on their Stage 2 group play performance.
    • Contestants finishing 3-4 in each group proceed to the final 16 knockout stage of the U1300 Blue Tournament and seeded in the Final 16 Stage based on their Stage 2 group play performance.

Final 16 Stage

  • U1400 Blue Final 16 Knockout Stage
    • 8 matches comprising of 4 games where each contestant plays two games as white and two games as black.
    • The winner of each match proceeds to the Quarterfinals Stage of the U1400 Blue Tournament.
    • The loser of each match is knocked-out of the U1400 Blue Tournament.
  • U1300 Blue Final 16 Knockout Stage
    • 8 matches comprising of 4 games where each contestant plays two games as white and two games as black.
    • The winner of each match proceeds to the Quarterfinal Stage of the U1300 Blue Tournament.
    • The loser of each match is knocked-out of the U1300 Blue Tournament.

Quarterfinal Stage

  • U1400 Blue Quarterfinal Knockout Stage
    • 4 matches comprising of 4 games where each contestant plays two games as white and two games as black.
    • The winner of each match proceeds to the Semifinal Stage of the U1400 Blue Tournament.
    • The loser of each match is knocked-out of the U1400 Blue Tournament.
  • U1300 Blue Quarterfinal Knockout Stage
    • 4 matches comprising of 4 games where each contestant plays two games as white and two games as black.
    • The winner of each match proceeds to the Semifinal Stage of the U1300 Blue Tournament.
    • The loser of each match is knocked-out of the U1300 Blue Tournament.

Semifinal Stage

  • U1400 Blue Semifinal Knockout Stage
    • 2 matches comprising of 6 games where each contestant plays three games as white and three games as black.
    • The winner of each match proceeds to the Final Stage of the U1400 Blue Tournament.
    • The loser of each match proceeds to the 3rd/4th place playoffs of the U1400 Blue Tournament.
  • U1300 Blue Semifinal Knockout Stage
    • 2 matches comprising of 6 games where each contestant plays three games as white and three games as black.
    • The winner of each match proceeds to the Final Stage of the U1300 Blue Tournament.
    • The loser of each match proceeds to the 3rd/4th place playoffs of the U1300 Blue Tournament.

3rd and 4th Place Playoffs Stage

  • U1400 Blue 3rd and 4th Place Playoffs Stage
    • A best of 8 games match will be played where each contestant plays four games as white and four games as black.
    • The winner of this match will be known as the 3rd place finisher in the U1400 Blue Tournament.
    • The loser of this match will be known as the 4th place finisher in the U1400 Blue Tournament..
    • In the event of a tie, 2 additional tie-break games will be played to decide a winner, one game as white and one game as black.
    • In the event that the match is still tied after the additional 2 tie-break games, both contestants will be awarded the title of 3rd place finisher in the U1400 Blue Tournament.
  • U1300 Blue 3rd and 4th Place Playoffs Stage
    • A best of 8 games match will be played where each contestant plays four games as white and four games as black.
    • The winner of this match will be known as the 3rd place finisher in the U1300 Blue Tournament.
    • The loser of this match will be known as the 4th place finisher in the U1300 Blue Tournament..
    • In the event of a tie, 2 additional tie-break games will be played to decide a winner, one game as white and one game as black.
    • In the event that the match is still tied after the additional 2 tie-break games, both contestants will be awarded the title of 3rd place finisher in the U1300 Blue Tournament.

Final Stage

  • U1400 Blue Final Stage
    • A best of 8 games match will be played where each contestant plays four games as white and four games as black.
    • The winner of this match will be known as the CHAMPION of the U1400 Blue Tournament.
    • The loser of this match will be known as the RUNNER-UP of the U1400 Blue Tournament.
    • In the event of a tie, 2 additional tie-break games will be played to decide a winner, one game as white and one game as black.
    • In the event that the match is still tied after the additional 2 tie-break games, both contestants will be awarded the title of CO-CHAMPION of the 2007 U1400 Blue Tournament.
  • U1300 Blue Final Stage
    • A best of 8 games match will be played where each contestant plays four games as white and four games as black.
    • The winner of this match will be known as the CHAMPION of the U1300 Blue Tournament.
    • The loser of this match will be known as the RUNNER-UP of the U1300 Blue Tournament..
    • In the event of a tie, 2 additional tie-break games will be played to decide a winner, one game as white and one game as black.
    • In the event that the match is still tied after the additional 2 tie-break games, both contestants will be awarded the title of CO-CHAMPION of the 2007 U1300 Blue Tournament.
